“Parthena Island” is a small island situated 400 meters from the north beach of Mikri Vigla. This is the reason why the beach is called “Parthena” (in English means Virgin). On the island there is a unique small church dedicated to Virgin Mary.  The island is a jewel of natural beauty and combined with the picturesque tiny church they create a unique cycladic  landscape.

The visitors can reach the island either with their private boat or with other floating units such as kanoe, windsurfing etc and of course the most braves can swim.

The island is worth to visit and enjoy the magic scenery.

The celebration

The small church celebrates 40 days after Easter which for the orthodox church is the celebration of the Resumption of the Christ. This celebration is a special day  for Naxos Island which the locals call “Plitheris”. Traditionally, it is the celebration of the shepherds. On the past it was the day they were cutting the sheep’ s fur and they were throwing them in the sea. Furthermore during that day at the farms the shepherds did not produce cheese but only the local sour milk and they were offering it to the their visitors. The meaning of all this was to pray for a good fortune during the summer that was just beginning and to multiply their goods. “Plitheris” comes from a Greek word that means plural.

For centuries and until the 80s Mikri Vigla was a grazing land and this is why the church is celebrated at this special day. Nowdays, although stockraising has been extincted from Mikri Vigla, the necessity for the hope that is represented by the meaning of this celebration still exists. This is why the local people of Mikri Vigla still carry out the celebration of the island.

On the day of the celebration the boats come from early in the morning to Mikri Vigla and they take the visitors to the island. There the orthodox liturgy is carried out and afterwards a traditional festival with local products, wines and of course music is set. It is an once in a lifetime experience.

A little of history

It is not known when the church was primarily built, surely it is more than 200 years old. It is believed that it was a vow of the fishermen as long as the little port of the island is a natural shelter for every wind. Primarily the church was dedicated to Saint Nicolas, who is the protector of the seamen for the orthodox church. The legend tells us that several years after it was firstly built, during a storm a fisherman left his daughter on the island so that it would be safer than staying on the boat with him. Unfortunately, when he went back to pick her, he realized that she was dead. Afterwards he rebuilt the church on the name of Virgin Mary as a tribute to his dead daughter.

Our apartments and studios

Our facilities constitute a complex of three different buildings, each of which features the characteristic elegant and traditional cycladic architecture. Building A has four different premium traditional apartments with two rooms that can host up to 4 persons each; they also have two verandas, the north one with the view to the sea and the south one with a view to the garden. Building B has 9 different studios and apartments, and is located right in front of the beach, offering a magnificent view to the sea while Building C has 13 studios and apartments of supreme taste that will satisfy even the most demanding ones. Whichever one you choose, you can be sure that your staying will be a most pleasant one.

At Victoria Studios, it’s not only our accommodation that will guarantee you relaxing holidays; our facilities also include: an outdoor pavilion and barbeque space where you can grill your own meat and have an amazing dinner, the loved Victoria cafe where you can enjoy your coffee or a cold refreshment or snack during your time at the beach and of course the playground with its variety of games which will keep our small friends happy. The Parthena beach of Mikri Vigla is also ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing lovers, due to the strong north winds that blow during the summer season.

Our location

Naxos island is known as the biggest of all Cyclades -and one of the most wonderful, too. Due to each size, there are so much to do; from hiking, to sightseeing, windsurfing, cycling, swimming and of course eating! Naxos is famous for its history, local delicacies as well as supreme beaches, with the characteristic crystal blue waters, whether lengthy and cosmopolitan like Plaka, or small and picturesque like Alykes. Mikri Vigla is known for its beauty and peacefulness; it is small cape that features two different beaches, the north one (Parthena) and the south one (Limanaki).

Mikri Vigla offer a spectacular view to Paros and is ideal if you are a lover of amazing sunsets; Parthena beach is lively, with restaurants, cafe-bars and the ultimate destination of windsurfing lovers; on the other hand, Limanaki is smaller yet picturesque and perfect for a quiet stroll and sunbathing. We were originally coming for 3 days and stayed 3 weeks. Victorias had everything and more that we needed. Step out of the room onto the white sand with the crystal clear blue water 20 metres away. Apartment was spotlessly clean and service every 2 days with fresh towels and sheets. Kitchen was very well equipped. Victoria was very generous…

A very good choice, especially for windsurfers! Good services, friendly owners and warm atmosphere with other residents. The rooms are big, clean, with a lot of facilities, and a good value of services for money. Moreover, it is 50-100m from the beach, and there are a lot of places to leave your windsurfing equipment.

Welcome to Mikri Vigla! Mikri Vigla is a small cape located on the south west coast of Naxos Island. It is consisted by two beaches: the North Beach called Parthena Beach and the South called “Limanaki – Alykes”. So you have a big advantage. In summertime when the north wind blows ypu can decide either to enjoy the wind on the North Beach and windsurf or kitesurf without limits, or enjoy the calmness and the crystal waters of the south beach. Do not forget that they are less than 10’ away by foot.

North Beach “Parthena” is the perfect windsurfing – kitesurfing spot during the windy days. A variety of bussineses are situated on the beach. Apartments, cafes, restaurants a supermarket and three windsurfing – kitesurfing clubs will provide to you everything you need on your holiaday. Locals say that if it was not the wind, Parthena Beach would have been the most beautiful on Naxos island. So do not worry if it not windy, because you are still on paradise.

South Beach “Limanaki” is so picturesque that you will loose your mind. Situated on the foot of Mikri Vigla hill is one of the ideal beaches to enjoy swimming and sunbathing. On the beach two restaurants are situated.

Mikri Vigla Hill completes the landscape. “Vigla” in greek language means watchtower, and this is what the hill was serving for in ancient years. It was the watchtower for locals guarding the sea between Naxos and Paros island. Do not miss getting on the top of the hill, the view is magical.
